Product photos that actually sell the item

Your first photo decides whether anyone reads anything else you wrote. It is worth more attention than the copy.

Daylight, near a window, not in direct sun

Indirect daylight is the single biggest upgrade available to most sellers and it costs nothing. A window on an overcast day is close to ideal: soft, even, and colour-accurate.

Direct sun creates hard shadows and blows out detail. Overhead room lighting casts a colour tint that makes whites look yellow and greys look green, the most common reason a buyer says the item did not match the photos.

A plain background, consistently

A plain wall, a sheet, or a plain floor. The point is that nothing in the frame competes with the item, and that your listings look like a set rather than a collection of unrelated snapshots.

Consistency has a compounding effect: a shop whose photos share a background reads as more professional than one with better individual photos taken in six different rooms.

Which shot goes first

The first photo should show the whole item, straight on, filling most of the frame. That is the one that appears in search results, and it is competing against a grid of other thumbnails.

Then use the remaining slots properly: a detail shot of the material or texture, any flaw shown honestly and close up, and where it helps, something for scale: a hand, a mug, anything familiar. Scale is the most commonly missed shot and one of the most useful.

Turn the photo into the listing

Once you have a good photo, Listcraft reads it and writes the title, description and tags, for Etsy, Vinted, eBay, Depop and more.

Common questions

Do I need a real camera to sell online?

No. A recent phone in good light beats a good camera in bad light. Light and background matter far more than the sensor.

How many photos should a listing have?

Use what the marketplace allows. More angles reduce questions and returns, and marketplaces generally favour listings that use the available slots.

Should I photograph flaws?

Yes, close up and clearly. A visible flaw in the photos makes every other claim in your listing more believable, and it is your defence in a dispute.
