How many tags can you use on Etsy?
Thirteen. The more useful question is what to put in them. Most sellers waste several on terms that repeat what the title already says.

Thirteen tags, and every empty one is a missed entry point
Etsy allows 13 tags per listing. Each is up to 20 characters and may contain spaces, so a tag can be a short phrase rather than a single word. There is no penalty for using all 13 and no bonus for restraint. An unused tag is simply a search you have opted out of appearing in.
Tags are one of the inputs Etsy matches a shopper's query against, alongside your title, category and attributes. A listing that fills 8 tags is competing in fewer searches than an otherwise identical listing that fills 13.
Spread them across how differently people search
The common mistake is 13 near-identical tags. "ceramic mug", "ceramic mugs", "ceramic coffee mug" and "mug ceramic" are one tag repeated four times as far as coverage goes: they all catch roughly the same shopper.
A better spread covers different intents for the same object. What it is ("ceramic mug"), what it is made of ("stoneware"), how it was made ("wheel thrown"), the style ("minimalist kitchen"), the occasion ("housewarming gift"), and who it is for ("coffee lover gift"). Each of those is a different person typing a different thing.
Long-tail tags (three or four words) convert better than broad ones even though they get less traffic, because someone typing "speckled stoneware coffee mug" already knows what they want. With 13 slots you can afford a mix: a few broad, several mid, a few very specific.
Do not spend tags on things Etsy already knows
Your categories and attributes already tell Etsy the colour, the material and the occasion where you have set them. Repeating an attribute verbatim in a tag mostly wastes the slot.
Plurals are also generally not worth a separate tag. Etsy handles that reasonably well. Spend the slot on a phrasing a different shopper would use instead.

It helps in the sense that each tag is another query you can appear in. It is not a ranking multiplier: a listing does not rank higher for having 13 tags rather than 10. It appears in more searches, which is a different and more useful thing.
