The Etsy title character limit, and how to use it
140 characters. Shoppers see roughly the first 40 of them, which makes the opening far more valuable than the rest, but the rest still counts.

Two audiences, one field
An Etsy title is doing two jobs at once. The whole 140 characters is read by Etsy's search index. Only the first stretch (around 40 characters on a phone, a little more on desktop) is read by a human scanning results.
That split is the whole strategy. The opening has to make sense to a person and carry your most important keyword. The tail can be more workmanlike, catching phrasings the opening did not cover.
Front-load the thing it actually is
Start with the noun phrase a shopper would type. "Speckled Ceramic Mug" beats "Handmade With Love In Our Studio" as an opening, because nobody searches the second one and the first tells a scanning eye exactly what they are looking at.
Brand names, your shop name, and words like "unique" or "beautiful" are the usual culprits eating the opening. None of them are searched by people who do not already know you.
Fill the tail with genuinely different phrasings
Once the opening is set, use the remaining space for variations a different shopper would type: material, style, occasion, recipient. Separate them naturally: commas and pipes both work, and readability matters more than the separator you pick.
The failure mode is keyword stuffing: the same word six times in 140 characters. It reads badly to humans and Etsy has been discounting it for years. If the title would embarrass you read aloud, it is too far.
Being under the limit is not a mistake either. A 90-character title that reads well beats a 140-character one padded with filler.

Common questions
How long should an Etsy title be?
Use most of the 140 characters, but stop when you run out of genuinely different phrasings. Padding to hit the limit adds nothing, and a title that reads like a keyword list can put shoppers off.
What should come first in an Etsy title?
The plainest description of what the item is, using the words a shopper would type. Shoppers only see roughly the first 40 characters in results, so anything decorative there is wasted.
Do commas in Etsy titles affect search?
Separators help readability more than ranking. Etsy reads the phrases either way. Pick whichever makes the title easiest for a person to scan.
