How to choose your 5 Depop hashtags

Five is fewer than you get almost anywhere else, and Depop shoppers search by vibe as much as by object. Every one has to earn its place.

Updated 11 August 2026

Aesthetic is a search term on Depop

On most marketplaces people search for objects. On Depop a very large share of searching is for a look (y2k, grunge, coquette, whatever is current) and the object is secondary.

That means at least two of your five hashtags should describe the aesthetic rather than the item. A cropped baby tee tagged only "top", "tshirt", "white" is invisible to the person searching "y2k".

A workable split for five

Two on aesthetic and era. Two on the item itself and its cut. One on brand, if the brand is one people search for. Otherwise spend it on fit or size where that is the selling point.

That covers browsers looking for a vibe and searchers looking for a garment. With only five slots you generally cannot serve brand loyalists as well, so let the brand earn its slot rather than including it by habit.

Your title lives in the description

Depop has no separate title field. There is one text box, capped at 1,000 characters, and the opening words do the job a title does elsewhere: they are what shows in search results and what a browsing buyer reads first.

So front-load the same way you would a title: aesthetic, item type, brand. Then the detail. Then the hashtags at the end. A listing that opens with "hi everyone!! selling this cute top" has spent its most valuable words on nothing.

Current beats accurate

Aesthetic language on Depop moves quickly. A term that pulled traffic two years ago may read as dated now. It is worth occasionally searching your own categories to see what language the top listings are actually using.

One caveat: tagging an aesthetic your item does not match gets clicks and no sales, and it trains the algorithm that your listings do not convert. Accuracy still wins over reach.

Common questions

How many hashtags does Depop allow?

Five per listing. That is fewer than Etsy’s 13, so there is no room for near-duplicates: each one should catch a different kind of shopper.

Does Depop have a separate title field?

No. There is a single description box of up to 1,000 characters, and the opening words act as the title in search results. Write the first line as though it were one.

Do Depop hashtags need the # symbol?

No. Enter them as plain words and Depop handles the formatting.

What are the best hashtags for Depop?

There is no universal set. It depends on your item and on what language is current. The reliable approach is the split: two aesthetic, two item, one brand or fit.
