Cross-listing the same item across marketplaces
Listing in more places sells more items, but pasting identical copy everywhere is the mistake that makes it not work.

The same item, genuinely different listings
Each marketplace has its own limits and its own tone. Etsy gives you 140 title characters and rewards story; Depop caps at 50 and rewards aesthetic language; eBay wants 80 characters of specification. A single piece of copy cannot be right for all three.
Pasting an Etsy description onto Depop produces a listing that reads as imported, converts badly, and often overruns the field. The item is the same. The listing should not be.
Where each marketplace pays off
Handmade and vintage do well on Etsy. Everyday secondhand clothing moves fastest on Vinted, particularly in Europe. Depop skews younger and rewards distinctive style over brand. eBay handles anything with a model number better than the rest. Poshmark and Mercari are US-centric, with Poshmark leaning fashion and social.
You do not need to be everywhere. Two or three marketplaces that match what you sell will outperform six that do not.
The overselling problem
The real operational risk of cross-listing is selling the same physical item twice. Most sellers manage this with a simple discipline rather than software: delist everywhere the moment something sells, and keep one list of what is live where.
It sounds trivial and it is the thing that most often goes wrong, because it happens at the moment you are busiest: packing an order.

Common questions
Is cross-listing allowed?
Yes, on all the major marketplaces. What is not allowed is failing to fulfil a sale because you sold the item elsewhere, which is why prompt delisting matters.
Can I use the same description on every marketplace?
You can, but it works poorly. Character limits differ and so does tone. A purpose-written listing for each converts noticeably better than one pasted everywhere.
Which marketplace should I start with?
Whichever matches what you sell. Handmade and vintage lean Etsy, everyday clothing leans Vinted, anything with a model number leans eBay.
